This research explores the impact of Bitcoin on the traditional banking system, focusing on its disruptive potential, implications for financial institutions, and regulatory challenges. The study employs a qualitative approach by analysing existing literature and market trends. Findings suggest that Bitcoin poses both risks and opportunities for banks, including disintermediation, financial inclusion, and increased cybersecurity concerns. Bitcoin’s ability to operate without intermediaries challenges the role of banks in financial transactions. The study concludes that traditional banks must adapt by integrating blockchain technology and modifying their business models to remain competitive.
One of the most profound impacts of Bitcoin on traditional banks is disintermediation, which reduces the reliance on banks for financial transactions. Bitcoin enables direct transfers between parties, bypassing the need for third-party validation, which has long been a core function of banks. Consequently, banks face the risk of revenue loss from transaction fees, remittances, and cross- border payments, as Bitcoin transactions offer a faster, cost-effective alternative. Furthermore, Bitcoin's borderless nature challenges banks' dominance in foreign exchange markets by providing a decentralized mechanism for international transactions without exchange rate fluctuations or intermediary fees.
In conclusion, Bitcoin represents both a disruptive force and an opportunity for the traditional banking sector. While it challenges existing financial models by reducing intermediation and altering global transaction systems, it also encourages innovation, efficiency, and inclusivity. Banks that embrace blockchain technology and adapt their business strategies will be better positioned to thrive in the changing financial landscape. Future research should explore Bitcoin’s long-term effects on banking profitability, monetary policies, and regulatory adaptation, ensuring that the financial system evolves to accommodate digital currencies in a secure and sustainable manner.
